A few days ago I updated the internet service to a new one that says "Up to 7mb/s". Generally the speed is good when connected directly with the modem, however whenever I plug stuff into my router, the speed dramatically decreases. Usually on microsoft.com downloads goes at about 1mb/s when connected with the modem. When I am using the router it won't ever go above 300kb/s. I have the same problem with my playstation 3. When connected to the router, it will hop maybe 1 mb every 5 seconds or so, when connected with the modem, it goes up one mb every second. I ran a speed test on www.speedtest.net and the result was still the same; both with the router and the modem. I have a wireless SMC router. It says 54mbs and 2.4ghz so my understanding would be that there shouldn't be any problems. I can give more information about the router if you need but otherwise anyone have any suggestions on how to improve the speed?

One thing that you can try is update the router's firmware. Sometimes the updates will help with speed issues.

Goodluck Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure on how to upgrade the firmware. I went to smc.com and could not find any update or anything along those lines. How do you do that because I'm not sure.

most routers have an ip address so you can access different things like security settings and firmware update this information (for the ip address) should be in your manual. This link might help some but check your manual also.
