I am attempting to fix a custom built PC with an Asus P5K-E that will not post at times. When it post's its fine but many times (9/10) it will not post and the fans will just hit high speeds. The CMOS needs to be cleared for it to POST again. Is there a modded BIOS version that will eliminate this problem or any modded BIOS version at all? Or how do I fix this?

No, I have not reflashed the current BIOS but I have updated to the latest and I believe the problem became worse.

This was really common with the P5K-E originally, but the latest BIOS was supposed to cure it. One of the reasons I never recommended this board... :S

Yea, I never liked the board either but when I built the computer for my friend he insisted on that board. I have the P5K-E Wifi edition and it works fine for me. I'll attempt to update his to the latest BIOS and see if it works. I'll let you know.

I think Shaffaaf had the P5K-E too and had no issues, but he practically flashed the board every month out of diligence, or so I heard, so who knows. I'm just a bit wary of flashing Asus boards as half the BIOSes out there brick the board.

I reflashed the BIOS and it seemed to work as of now. I'm still waiting overnight to see if it'll recover itself from a cold boot.
What settings should I set in the BIOS for CPU, etc?
Why did the Vista rating go down from 5.9 to 5.6 in the Memory Category? Memory settings are 5-5-5-15 @ 2.1v

Presumably because your memory speed dropped back to 800? Not that I would have thought going form 800 to 820 would earn you another 0.3 in the experience index, but who knows.

I did check my RAM with memtest and it passes with no erros. Once the computer is on it's fine, just POSTing is the problem. Also have a problem with the 8800GT inside overheating but some AS5 should solve that.

The only times I've encountered such a scenario, the motherboard has been at fault.

I downgraded to another Asus BIOS just now and it seems to be working fine, its wierd.
Now, another problem with the same computer.
It has an 8800GT. It went up to 87C while playing Halo 2 Vista at max settings. Opened it up and replaced the thermal paste with AS5 and now it hits 79C. While playing you see the framerate start to drop just a bit, not that noticable (game still completly playable) and then suddenly a greenish tint comes on the screen and the game freezes. Is this drivers or the video card at fault?

Could be either. Try a different driver first, if no luck it's probably the card.

what did you downgrade to (and did you get the bios file from Asus support site)?
I'm having this same known issue and upgrading to latest bios version didn't fix it, so thinking of downgrading as I've heard this has worked for a few...
