Best option on how to play mkv files with bluray quality ?

When trieng to convert mkv files to dvd-r the output size is to big therfore it removes that option for me. I cant justify spending extra $$ for a double layer dvd which will have so much space left over.

I am using a bdp-bx1(which is a sony s350) is there anyway to view these files on this player without using a dvd (like external hd, or streaming)

Or would a better option be to trade this in for a ps3
Is there options to hookup an external hd to directly play mkv files from it without loss quality compared to playing from dvd-r?
I also hear a lot of talk about streaming to ps3, how is this done.. do you lose quality compared to if i were able to burn to dvd-r ?

Basically what would be the best way to view many mkv files in blu ray quality ?

On a side note is it ok to place this bluray player ontop of my dish dvr which is twice the size/weight of this bluray or should i place it below.. would any of the heat exhertion damage any components ?
