So, my computer crashed during (I think) a scheduled defrag being run by Tune-Up Utilities 09, and to cut a long story short, my files on my external HD are all messed up. All the filenames and directories are exactly where they should be, but that actual content of those files is wrong. As mentioned in the title, if I try to open a video in VLC, I might get segments of an mp3, for example. I don't even know what to Google to try and find a fix for this.

I've run a system restore and chkdsk to no avail, and I'm currently running the Windows defrag on that drive to see if it works, but I'm not feeling too optimistic. If anyone has ANY ideas, I'd be very appreciative.

(Not one for technical stuff, but I'm running XP Professional on SP3 if it makes any difference. Some kind of Athlon in there and 3 gig of RAM. If any other details are necessary, I'll do what I can to find them.)
