hello everyone,

i just got the internet back at my house and when i went to hardline my PC into the router i noticed that i dont have my local area network icons in my network connections folder. and without these i am unable to use the internet. i have no clue how these managed to disappear or where they even went to. i tried comparing my services from my PC to my laptop, which has the LAC in its network connections folder, but everything seems to be the same. so if anyone could help me solve the problem, i would greatly appreciate it as im tired of running my PC via a wireless card. also, im running XP pro if that makes a difference.
thanks in advance.

What are your VIEW settings for My Network Places?

Double click MY NETWORK PLACES.

they are you state they should be, but all i have is two separate groups, once labeled as 'incoming' with an 'incoming connections' icon, and the other section is 'LAN or high-speed internet' and all i have in it is 'wireless network connection' and '1394 connection.'

so im still missing the 'local area connection' icon from that set.

Have you tried going through the Create a New Connection Wizard? I only showed my router originally. After going through my NCW, I now show an Internet Gateway Group with an Internet Connection icon. I also now show my Ethernet Connection.

So you're trying to connect via Cat5, but can't?

Usually that means the driver installed is incorrect.

right, im attempting to just hardline my desktop to either the modem, or the router, that way i can get higher speeds than the 54 that the router puts out.

I'd definitely double check the driver installed for the network card.

I'd try the above. If there is an updated driver on the web, install it. If that doesn't work, uninstall the network card from Device Manager first (hopefully it's there!) then reboot and it should automatically detect the new hardware. Best of luck.

What network card are you using? If it's the onboard network card (built into the motherboard) then make sure it's enabled in the BIOS. If it's enabled and still not working, then you might want to try a PCI based network card. I've seen onboard network cards die before and the only solution was to replace the motherboard or install an add-in ethernet card. If you don't have one, ask around (one of your friends might have one they'd give you) or you can always buy one for less than $20.

Generic NIC

Middle-of-the-road NIC

Higher-end Gigabit NIC

Of course, if you buy a NIC, make sure you have an available slot on your motherboard and that it's compatible. The links above are for PCI cards.

im using the onboard one, and would rather not use a PCI card since i dont have any more slots available, and the wireless card that im using is taking up a PCI slot that i need for my HD's. thats the main reason for trying to get this fixed.

as for the driver update/reinstall, im working on finding that now, i just got back from classes so it may take me some time to find it.

thanks to all of you, after updating my bios and my chipset, i restarted and found i had both of my LAC's. now i just have to get it stop being a limited connection, but i think that was because i was going straight from the modem to my PC instead of the modem, to router to pc.

UPDATE-

rebooted the PC again, and all is well now. thanks to all of you who helped!

Glad that helped. You may want to download and save WinsockXPFix if you ever get those "limted connectivity" messages again. Going to command prompt and doing an ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew will usually help too without having to reboot.
