About 3 or 4 years ago I bought a Samsung DVD-VR320 DVD/VCR Combi recorder. The main reason was to transfer all my VHS tapes, taken from my camcorder, onto DVD. this all worked out OK and then I continued by transferring direct from the camcorder onto DVD.
My problem is, playback of these DVD's has become increasingly temperamental with lots of picture break up and stoppages, sometimes message 'This disc cannot be played or recorded. Check disc'. The discs I used were all good quality, Panasonic etc., DVD-RW, formatted to DVD-V and finalised after recording finished. I have cleaned the laser lens using a soft brush alone, and also with Servisol switch cleaner. Sometimes there is some improvement but basically unsuccessful. I also have a cheap Bush DVD player and at first this seemed to playback OK but even this, whilst better than the Samsung, still gives problems.I am at a loss to know what to do next. Very frustrating because my whole reason for going onto DVD was to safeguard the old video. I am tempted to go and buy new equipment based on the feeling that the Bush is fairly old and was cheap and the Samsung has had some iffy reviews.
Any ideas what is causing my problem, guys?
Thanks in advance,
Aitchjay

Aitchjay- FWIW RW= Rewritable disc are'nt the best choice for cherished memories or Videos that have'nt made it to dvd yet ! Your best bet it to use them for test disc only & if the RW's work okay then Burn the DVD-R or DVD+R whichever your recorder calls for Or if it works with both whichever you like better ? or Have at the time ? I would stick with a quality brand Though ! Verbatim , Taiyo Yuden, Sony ect...

Thanks for replies so far Pieman and Bigtox.
Will look out for the Taiyo Yuden which I have never seen but have seen Verbatim. Are Verbatim OK.
From what you say dvd-rw or dvd+rw are less durable, or whatever the word, than dvd-r or dvd+r?
Thanks

I still have quite a bit of 8mm/VHS home vids to dvd from 5+ yrs ago. The discs that gave me trouble last year when I went to make copies of: Memorex!!!!! The sony,verbatim,and Maxell hitachi backups are still going strong. A good PC burner also helps out for better/highly compatable backups. If I transferred those 8 mm backups onto my tv recorder using maxell hitachi +8x,then my HP640C burner would screw it up.
Quality blank media,Quality PC dvd-rw drive/s= Better playing backups.
El Cheapo stand alone players: That's the only thing cheap that you can get away with. They'll play anything you slap in them,especially the $20 ones. Keep the discs clean before inserting into any drive.
Keep your Tapes Aitchjay. I gotta fealing the tape will last longer than the backup dvds.
+RW/-RW vs +R/-R: RW backups will have a lower compatability rate vs the R. RW's are great to practice with,but not reliable when being played in several different drives.I'm not sure about the durability,but if you see any of the No Disc error messages that drives put out and won't play them,the type of disc and/or format is usually the culprit: Dirty disc/Wrong Region/Wrong Format/Illegal disc/or No Disc.

Aitchjay- Taiyo Yuden is pretty much an On-line Retailer Brand - Supermediastore.com , Meritline.com Rima.com are the retailers that most hardcore Afterdawn.com Members are Familiar with and recommend ! their are several others as you'll find out with a little internet Research LIke Shop4tech.com But They Shop4tech.com had a somewhat less than stellar history so you may ant to tread litely if you order from them ! I have ordered from meritline & Supermediastore before and it was always a good experience ! Rima I've never dealt with But have heard only Good things about ! You Might also ocassionaly Find so Sony Made IN japan DVD media that will Code out as Taiyo Yuden But those are getting rare to the point of extinction ! Their are also Sony DVD media disc That are Made in Japan but are Coded as sony's in practical use I've found these atleast as good as The Made in Taiwan Sony's IMHO anyway whaich ain't bad !If Your trying to find some Made in Japan Sony's You may want to hit stores that sell DVD media but don't turn over a lot of stock ( Sears K-marts , Some walmarts , Big-lots , Walgreens , Rite-Aids Stores ect ... In other words Stores that are'nt specifically Technology - Consumer electronics/ Computer oriented like A best Buy or Officedepot ! Aditionally Yoi maight run into a even rarer critter MIJ= Made in Japan Fuji's = also Taiyo yuden but not as likely to be found as the sony's ! Also They're not Taiyo Yudens but still excellent disc if you can find they are Maxells That are MIJ =Made in japan as These are ade by Hitachi/maxell which is the parent Company and not by another manufacturer for them ! You may find these a little more often than the sony/taiyo Yudens atleast that's been my experience . But the surest way to get taiyo yuden is to go to one of the online retailers and order some ! though it kinda takes the fun out of the hunt if you get my meaning !! Good luck and happy burning my friend!!!

I'll agree with the lil' dancing booger, keep your tapes as long as you have a VCR to play them in. I have backed up some 25 year old tapes that still play onto Sony, Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden disks, the oldest are 4 years old and still play great. My personal opinion and feeling is that the disks will outlast the DVD technology, but the VHS tapes will outlast the VCR players. We may be stuck with a whole collection of VHS family movies and no way to view them in a few years I am afraid.

blivetNC- Tell me about it ? I had a Toshiba VHS Hifi Crap out on me ! After 2 years of hard use Making VHS to DVD dubs of Movies I got from biglots chaep that were'nt available on dvd yet ! No problem right just paid like $30.00 or so for it a winn-dixie I'll Just buy another cheap VCR ! { WRONG} The regular VHS VCR - Not VHS /DVD combo is a Dinosaur ! As far as I can tell if you want a new VHS machine it's gotta be a VHS/VCr/DVD Combo in either Player or recorder format With the Player type being cheaper {Naturally} Otherwise it's refurb-time or go to a goodwill/thrift store/pawnshop & takes your chances !!!- or you can go Ebay and buy refurbed as well !!! Personally I'm CheaP !!!!!! { I see you are'nt surprised by this !} so I'm not gonna pay $60.00 on up for a VHS machine just cause it has a DVD player that I don't need or want Built in ! and The Obscure Movies are coming to dvd more and more all the time !!! I have other VCRs to so that helps !! and I already have the DVD recorder so in the Immortal words of CHEf From South Park "FUDGE'EMS!!!"

@AitchJay, you said,
?My problem is, playback of these DVD's has become increasingly temperamental with lots of picture break up and stoppages, sometimes message 'This disc cannot be played or recorded.?
If you are having problem only with previously recorded disks;
Most likely your disks are deteriorating. Although, those disks may be readable in the other players, typically in PC?s (Newer drive would have better chance.) Try to read on PC and copy to DVD-R (or +R) media. (It is easier and faster than starting from VHS again.)
If you are having problem even with newly recorded with brand new disk;
Your choice of media type and its brand may solve your problem. Though probably it is time to look for new DVD Player/recorder.
You might have chosen DVD-RW, because you might have wanted to do some editing work (Erasing the part, adding chapter mark etc.) with the recorder. Though I assume you were upgraded your camcorder from analog to digital. So consider edit and burn DVD on your PC. It is more reliable and faster.

Thanks guys. Seems like my best bet is to hopefully play these discs on my PC and then burn onto Verbatim / Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's. Thanks for your time and lots of info!

It's important to store them on end and best to FF them to the end one year, then rewind them to the start the next.
