Hey guys.. i need help connecting a friends laptop to my PC. ive tried networking them but i have no idea what i am doing and every attempt i made resulted in nothing happening lol.

im running windows XP Home (SP2 [i think]) and my friends laptop has Windows XP Pro (SP3)

a quick step by step guide will be very appreciated :)

an easy to understand one preferbly heh heh

Are you trying to just plug the two computers up directly or are you going through a hub/router/switch?

directly i guess.. i dont have a router :(

thats why im using a LAN cable.. its the cable i usually use to connect my xbox360 with

You can't do that. You need a special crossover cable in order to connect computers directly... without a hub/router/switch.

And then you'll need to change the Network addressing from DHCP (probably what you're using) to static IP addressing, making sure that both addresses are in the same subnet.

Get your crossover cable (or hub) first. Without that nothing else matters.

is this crossover cable a RJ45 cable? because its the same one i use for my 360.. i was told that i couldnt use one to connect my xbox 360 up to xbox live.. but strangely enough it works. admittedly though it's not a brilliant connection lol but i still play online with hardly any interuptions :)

so is this cable still alright to use?
