xbox doesnt recognize cd's

We have one of the old x-boxes and it will not recognize the cd's. The only one it will play is the burger king one my grandson got for free. My daughter loaned it out to some friends and when we finally got it back there was just the box. We had to buy new controllers just to play. What can I try? Can I use my dvd cleaner? it's the one that checks surround sound and video colors. Do we have to have a memory card or is that just to save. My grandson is using it and he is only 4 so try to explain to him it wont work. Ha. Impossible. So please help us.
