first, from what ive found, this seems to be the best way considering I just have a slim ps2 and use the swap magic method, right?

second, will any external hard drive work?

third, what software will I need and where do I find it? (is it something I can download for free or will I need to have a pressed disc?

fourth, and this may be a dumb question, but would one of the 8gb sd cards in a card reader work instead of a hard drive (assuming the game would fit.

From my experience I could never get DVD9 games too work on an external USB drive.
You can however use the DVD5 versions.

You could also install fmcb 1.8 to your memory card using your Swap magic and use the ESR.ELF to play DVD9 backups.

I have heard of some using the card reader with an SD card.

You basically would have to try it too see if it works.
