Hi
we are using a server with a removable HD [SAMSUNG HD161 HJ]which we were backing up on each night. we needed to close PC each time to remove/install it. we decided to add another so we alternate our backups each night. I purchased a WD1600AAJB with a power rack and 2 Sata to USB adapters so we could remove using the safe to remove option.
The original Samsung works fine but the new Western Digital is not recongnised, although it did recongnise the USB to IDE/SATA device.
can someone tell me why it may not be seeing the new HD please?

Hi ddp
no, not seen in either of those, no it has not been formatted, I thought that it would show up and I would be led down that path, how can I partition something I can't see? hopefully you can point out something really dumb I am missing
Cheers

yep
power goes to external power supply which comes with the SATA to USB adapter, green power light on the rack shows green
data comes out via the sata/USB adapter then into our USB port

could the HD not be compatable with our PC?
wasn't sure if I need to push that little jumber on the back of the HD or not? [i did try a couple of different positions]
anything I need to do in the boot screen setup?

will do, have to pick the right time to close server is all
by enclosure do you mean the power rack [or super rack] or whatever it is that it slides into? this is what I think the PC picks up [the USB rack] but not the actual HD that slides into it
will check BIOS in the morning but I'm sure it doesnt see it

BIOS reads

IDE PRIMARY MASTER HD
IDE PRIMARY SLAVE [not detected]
SATA 1 [not detected]
SATA 2 ATAPI CDROM

I have now removed the drive and rack and will try installing on another PC

tried it on another PC, same thing
hooked it up without using the rack, even hooked it up using the sata cable from the sata/USB adapter directly to the sata input [not using the USB] still can't see the HD

next step to try another HD using the adapter?
the new HD is an IDE but that shouldn't matter should it??

remove the jumper that tells the drive it is master, slave or cable select. that jumper is on the backend of the drive between the ide connector & power connector. jumper color can be white, black, red or blue. this is the main dislike i have with wd drives compared to other ide hd manufacturers in that if the wd ide drive is by itself then jumper has to be removed. does the motherboard have ide connectors especially for the rom drives?

this is the jumber on the new WD HD? it has been removed, also tried in various positions out of desperation. Our main HD has a jumber which I assume because it's the master, the other removable HD is the sata/USB thingy.
the DVDROM is IDE

try the wd drive in place of the ide rom drive to see if seen in the bios. try the jumper both on & off.

Good one ddp
tried that, found it, formatted it and gave it a letter.
reinstalled as the USB drive and reinstalled ROM drive and I'm in business!!
So it seems unless it was pre-formatted then the removable USB setup "can't see it" and it can't be used

anyway, cheers for all your help
fantastic to get a result
