I have an NEC / Optiarc Burner 7071A. I have always burned my movies with Nero on DVD+r discs. Well, a couple people said they wouldn't play so I was told DVD-R might be more compatible. I bought some and tried to burn a movie. I got an error message stating POWER CALIBRATION ERROR. It spun up once and then just stopped. I put in a DVD+R and tried the same movie and it worked fine.
Any ideas why this is happening? My booktype is set for DVD-ROM on my DVD+R media but when I put in DVD-R it shows up as DVD-R. But this burning is supposed to be able to burn both +/-R.
It's making me CRAZY! HELP!
Thanks!
Gina

Booktyping does not apply to the -R format which is why it shows -r as opposed to dvd-rom. It appears as though your firmware is the most up to date available. You should try slowing down your burning to around 4x for starters and see if that makes any difference. For some reason, as you are aware of, your burner is not liking your media.

Do you have any Sonic software installed as this has been known to cause conflicts with other software including Nero.

The odd thing is I use the DVD+ Ritek DVDs all the time. That's all I use. These are DVD-R Ritek DVDs... exact same brand, just the minus instead of plus.
I just put in four plus discs and they worked fine... put in a minus and nothing... same error.
No, I am not using anything Sonic. And even if there was something on my system, why would plus discs work and not minus discs with everything else the same?
This is my first time trying the DVD-R because I make some movies and a very few people said they wouldn't play on their DVDs standalone players. I read the DVD-R might help that even though I have booktyped my burner to DVD-ROM and thought that would help the DVD+R to be more compatible.
This is very frustrating!! Any other ideas why this could be happening?
Thanks sooooooooo much! I really apppreciate any help I can get on this :)

Although Ritek may manufacture both the DVD-R and DVD+R discs, those discs are very different from each other in the way the drive sees them. It is very possible that your drive has instructions in its firmware memory to record Ritek DVD+R 16X discs properly but does not have the correct instructions for DVD-R 16X discs. (This may be related to changes in the molding that some manufacturers have made in order to allow some drives to record at a final speed of 18X or 20X.) If that is the case, just stick with the DVD+R discs with the book setting to DVD-ROM. It is unlikely that DVD-R discs will be more compatible for playback than those discs. You might also try to record at 8X or even 4X to see if that makes a difference.
The reason that ferguj1 asked about having Sonic/Roxio recording software on your computer in addition to Nero is the appearance of the CDRALW2K.SYS' driver. This particular drive is notorious in causing conflicts with Sonic/Roxio software, and the combination of Sonic/Roxio and Nero on the same system causes frequent and unpredictable problems. If you remove Sonic/Roxio completely--and it is not easy--your problem with DVD-R media may go away.

Another strange thing is most people with this problem, as I have read, report that their burner won't recognize the DVD-R. Mine recognizes it fine and reports data on it fine with DVDInfoPro. It spins up a couple times when I go to burn and then errors out. This is veryyyyyyy frustrating as I'm just not one of those people who say, "Oh, well... it doesn't work. I won't use it." I always need to know why or want to fix it.
I'm going to go through and see if I can find anything Roxio in the registry and find a list of drivers that are associated with Roxio maybe and delete manually and try again.
If anyone has any other ideas, please, please..... I'd really appreicate it :)
