Hello friends. Recently I endured a million hours to encode & burn my copy of Batman the Dark Knight. I was somehwhat successful in that I used BD-RB (rebuilder) to encode the M2TS large file to a working directory on my drivie & subsequently burning it to a 25GB BD using IMGBURN & LG BD Multi purpose drive. I successfuly invoiked the BD on the drive which brought up the img I created. Once I doubled click on the img file, it invoked my PowerDVD 8 Ultra & played the movie. I have a 22" HD monitor on my computer and the movie played great!!!It mirrored my original blue Ray movie. However, my Sony s300 set top says it can't play the move. Can anyone tell me where I went wrong in that my multi purpose LG internal drive can play it, but my Sony S300 BD player cannot. Regards Mtouset

Thank you for your question which has led me to call Sony Support only to learn that my Sony S300 or other Sony Set Top player cannot play backups on blank BDs...that the player is not compatible with BD ROMs. That it will only commercially produce DVDs including rentals. No backups on DVD blank. It appears as though I'm stuck with a BD player that will not accept anything but commercially purchased DVDs. I'm still very confused because, while I can make backups of my movies, I cannot play them on my player. I'm relegated to play my bacups on my computer with my LG Super Multi Blu Ray read/writer. If you or anyone else have information contrary to what I have stated here, please let me know. I thank you again as it prompted me to do my inquiry with Sony Support.

I have a friend with a Sony sS350 and another with a Sony S550. They can play burned BD-R/-RE's plus backups of home-made DVD's on DVD+R or -R media.

errpr5. Thank you so much. I contacted Sony Support again and was told what you are telling me...that my discs should be compatible. They are also sending me a disc contain firmware 4.5. I thought I successfully download the firmware (ISO file) from their site and burned onto my CD-R using Nero but I'm not sure the download onto the BD player was successful. One would think that I would see it on the TV screen, but I didn't. On the BD Player screen it said "dwnld OK" whatever that means. I guess I'll just keep at it until I succeed. Thanks again. Regards, Miguel

I finally found another friend who has the S300 and he says the BD-R/-RE capability was added at an even earlier firmware update. He thinks it was the 3.5 update.
He has been burning 25GB and 50GB discs with different software packages including ImgBurn and he says they all play fine on his S300. He has also tried AVCHD discs burned on DVD+R plus regular DVD backups on +R and -R media - all with no problems.

Error5. This is great news!! I purchased my S300Dec 2007 so I'm not sure of the firmware version. Nontheless, I have been trying to upgrade the firmware to 4.5 which I downloaded from Sony Support Site. I was told that I had to burn the file on to the CD as an image for it to work. I thought I did that by using Nero StartSmart and burning the file to a TDK CD-r. as an image. I don't it worked. While I have yet to make it work, your information has been invaluable, if for nothing other than, knowing it can work with my S300. I'll let you know how it goes. Regards Miguel

Error5. You have been very helpful and I have succeeded in updating my firmware in the player to 4.50. While I succeeded with this update, The player still does not recognize my BD backup which is on a Verbatim BD-RE 25GB. Both my TV screen, in BD mode, and the BD player screen say cannot play this disc. Specifically, the player screen indicates "CAN'T PLAY" and the TV screen indicates "Cannot play this disc" I am actually at a loss. I encoded the movie using BD-Rebuilder (took forever and creating a working directory on my D drive. Then I used IMGBURN to burn the MPEG-2 transport stream on to the BD. By the way the same BD backup playes beautifully on my computer using LG Super Multi Blue Drive. a 22" HD monitor, and PowerDVD 8 Ultra. When I insert the BD bacup into the drive, the movie file pops up and I have to double click or open that file which brings up PowerDVD which plays the movie. I guessing it probably has to do with the way I used IMGBURN to burn the movies. Speading out-of-school, I could have burned a movie file on to the BD rather that an actual image. It appears, I have to retrace my steps to get the image back on to the BD-RE. I believe it has to work because your friend has had success. While I've learned a great deal, I know I have a great deal to learn. Thanks again for your continuiing assistance.

Are you burning just the M2TS file, or are you burning the BDMV and CERTIFICATE folders created by BD-Rbuilder? A PC will play basically any media file type, stand alones on the other hand need the file to be in a specific structure... which is what I mentioned earlier.
Burn the BDMV and CERTIFICATE folders created by BD-Rebuilder using IMGBurn, use the UDF2.5 file system (it's an option in IMGBurn). Yur player should read the disc now.

Obviously, I missed this recommendation at first. Yes I only burned the M2TS file. It was contained in the MDMV Folder. Also I thought that I could only burn a file and not a folder. Do I just select the File, and also two folders? Not exactly sure what you mean by burning the MDMV and CERTIFICATE folders or their content. Is is done separately? I'm afraid you're talking above my knowledge or experience level...I'll keep trying!

Just select the two folders. The large M2TS file is buried deep inside the BDMV folder.

HURRAY!!!After burning the two folders (MDMV & CERTIFICATE), the movie plays on my S300 Sony BD Player, and looks FANTISTIC on my 52" Sony Bravia LCD.
The AfterDawn team is terrific, and a special thanks to Error5 and Odin24 for guiding me through to success.

Hi Guys I seem to be having problems similar to the ones mentioned here. I downloaded files which unrar to MKV files I used DMuxer with the Blu-ray setting . This gave me BDMV and CERTIFICATE folders which I burned with IMGbURN. This was done following the steps in Afterdawn guide " Convert MKV to AVCHD for ps3 and Blu-ray". Although the resultant dvd plays great on my PC it will not play correctly on my Sony BDP S350 although the player should accept this type of disc. I have upgraded the player to the latast firmware.
like the previous poster I am using LG Super Multi Blue Burner. and Blu-ray discs. The problem with my picture is that it is split into 2 halves . There is a division in the centre of the screen , The LH side is in full colour and super quality whilst the RH side is in Black and White both images bleed into each other. If I put the S350 into pause the division disappears. Rung Sony. Say they can not help. Any info would be gratefully received, Thank You BrianB

Your mkv does not have a Blu-ray compliant video stream. The dimensions of the video must be 1920x1080 or 1280x720, anything else and you will get problems like you described. The only solution is to re-encode, and add the black widescreen bars back in.

If you make an image out of the BDMV and CERTIFICATE folders it will play fine... as long as you burn as a UDF2.5 disc.
