My KiSS DP-558 has just given up the ghost. This was a flawed gem of a PVR - it seemed to be a Linux PC in a consumer package. It did all the usual PVR stuff - recording from my Virgin box, pausing live TV etc., DVD playback, but the crowning feature was an ethernet port and a streaming server I could install on my PC. I could stream all my content from my PC (there's a lot there) rather than copying it onto a DVD-R or USB stick. I could navigate and watch rather than browse the hard drive, start up a copy job and go make a cup of tea. I could upload captured video and edit it on my PC. I even had web radio available to me as well.

Of course, things may have moved on since then. If anyone can recommend a solution that would be truly helpful. One other thing I would use it for was copying my old VHS tapes to the hard drive for superior archival - they're starting to go a bit "rusty" now...

Cheers,
Guy
