3 weeks ago I purchased a WRT54G2, and up until yesterday, I had no problems whatsoever. All of a sudden, the labtop that I was connecting wirelessly to the router no longer wants to connect to it, and the yellow dot that moves back and forth down on the wireless icon skips around randomly instead of following its normal pattern (i'm running XP). Now, I've done everything I can think of: hard reset, updating the firmware, changing the wireless channel (originally it was on channel 6), changing the security or just turning it off (originally I had WPA Personal), reinstalling the drivers for my labtop's wireless adapter, using an external wireless card instead in the labtop, attempting to connect to the network with another labtop (which was running Vista)..all with no success I was on the phone with some foreign guy from Linksys HQ and after telling me to try everything that I already had, he said that the router was fine and that it was my computer adapter. I find that hard to believe since the other labtop had the same problems I did. The funny thing is, my PS3 can connect to my wireless network no problem, so this connection issue seems to be just computer based (as far as I can tell). I have the router hardwired to a desktop computer, on which the internet works fine on.
Is there anything else I can try? I should note that I live in an apartment, with internet coming out of the wall and having no direct access to the buildings modem. I should also note that before 3 weeks ago, I owned an WRT54G, which after having that router for some time gave me the same problem I'm having now. It's not too soon to take the router back, I still have the receipt, and I know when I got the G2 the problem was gone..at least temporarily. If anyone has any advice whatsoever I would greatly appreciate it. This site has always come through for me in the past.

A couple quick questions, if you look in the hardwired computer, can you see yourself trying to connect with the laptop? Or is it just showing just the ps3 (if connected.) And another question, when you tried the hard reset did you access the modem through your hardwired system (booted in safe mode-networking) and re-configured the wireless router throught IE 192.168.1.1 (not the setup program that comes with the router, password should be admin unless you changed it).
I had the WRT54G, and had the same problems with where every few weeks, mine or any friends laptops couldn't connect at all though the hardwired systems and wireless printer showed up in the network.
Sometimes that didn't work though, and I'd have to boot the laptop also into safe mode-network to reset the connection there as well (plugged into the router and the same procedures as the hardwired system). But a majority of the time, just doing it off the hardwired system worked and laptops would be able to connect. Not to sure about the WRT54G2, but this may work as well. Hope it does for you. :)

I wasn't aware that there was a "networking" version of safe mode..so what do you have to do differently to reset the router in safe mode than you would when xp is running normally?
Could you tell me what I need to do on both computers to reset the connection in safe mode?
PS Yes, i do use the 192.168.1.1 to configure

When you boot up your system (thats wired into directly to the modem), boot it up as safe with networking support. Access your router through IE and enter settings, then reset into factory default using the firmware installed on the router. Then enter in the settings you want to use for the laptop, save changes and reboot. If it still doesn't work, then plug the laptop into the router and repeat, but for me, 9 out of 10 times, just doing the computer hard wired into the router works. It's something to do with the security settings not clearing, at least thats what I had with the WRT54G. Let me know if it works for the G2. And I do apologize, I wan't sure if you used it browser window or the networking program to access the router settings.

What I ended up doing was returning the router and getting a new one in return, with that one working just fine. Until now. Exactly 20 days later (same amount of days as last time). So I tried what you had said about booting in safe mode with networking on the hardwired computer and then also hardwired the router to my labtop, with no success. It seems that once in awhile a Windows bubble comes up and says "Windows is unable to get a certificate that will connect you to the network (Network name)" I've googled this and tried everything that I could see, and still nothing. I'm wondering if I should just replace this one again, and just don't have any security whatsoever on the router, therefore bypassing all this encryption errors that I'm getting exactly 20 days after activation of the new router.
Do you have any other suggestions or know of what the cause might be? Should I just go and replace the router and try with no encryption for 20 days and see what happens?

Have you tried to reset your router to ?Factory Defaults?? (Through Web-Based Utility)- You DO NOT have to do with PC in safe mode.
With your old and new router, have you set up router password? If not, there is a good chance someone is fooling you since the default password is known to public. Someone could reset or change it.
I do not know much about game console. I do not have good idea how it could connect through YOUR router (I doubt that it can with encryption.).
(Any chance that it is connecting trough somewhere else?) Though if it can, most likely the problem is your laptop configuration.
If it works, please do not forget to change (set) router password.
(Edit: add safe-mode comment)
