I have a Toshiba laptop linked to my LG LCD TV using a VGA cable.
But I want to buy a surround sound system (probably only 2.1) for my TV. I also want the sound from my laptop to go through these speakers for music. Is this possible? If so, exactly what items would I need to buy to make it work?

Thanks.

There is nothing "surround" about 2.1, that's just stereo.

Save your money and at least get a low end 5.1 Surround system. As long as your laptop has an audio out, with the appropriate cable, you'll be able to hook into one of the units inputs.

I live in a tiny uni flat mate, so I don't really need loads of speakers! All I want is a bit of bass to be honest.

Would it be possible to get tv surround sound, and then plug the laptop in from the headphone socket?

A Simple way is to hook up an FM transmiter to your headphone jack and transmit your audio to an fm station on your radio. you can buy one for about 25 dollars

It's possible, easily.

1) Your 3 post = Solution #1. If your TV has inputs for sound (ie. 3.5 mm) than, you can utilize any random 3.5 cord (males on both ends), and plug on from your laptop to your TV. Remember, the plugs do NOT no what output source you have. This can be speakers, headphones, or even an input source too. Most current sound cards/ integ. on mobos support having input sources on outputs and vv too!

2) Have a splitter on the plug of the speakers. I'll use a primative diagram to show you how it would somewhat look.

Speakers -> Splitter -> Cord via TV -> TV
/////////////////////-> Cord via Laptop -> Laptop

Solution #1 would be easier. Less cords. Simpler = better looking (most cases!), and that makes it easier to maintain, fix if anything happens.

If the TV does NOT have a 3.5 sound input, instead w/ composite sound (I call it... the Red/White), you can get a splitter from that too to a 3.5. Where I live anyways, they can be found in a local dollar store. Surely computer stores have it, or should have it (ie. Newegg, TD, etc!)

Good Luck!
