Alright, so here's the deal. I upgraded to the DD-WRT firmware on my Linksys WRT54G v2.0 router. The version I grabbed must be buggy because it won't let me assign MAC addresses or do any of that fun stuff. I tried upgrading to something else and the page just errors out on me. Technically, it's not bricked or anything, I just can't change certain settings.
Can I use the TFTP command to issue the new .bin file or does that have to be done during boot up of the router?

What version of DD-WRT have you got. Mine are in my signature.
It's been a while since i flashed any of my 6 or so DD-WRT routers so i'm a little rusty, will wander over to the DD-WRT forums to refresh the cobwebs..

I'm using VINTage. It's listed on their supported device list under section 3.23.
Link to that page.
Quote from the page for versions 1 through 3.0.
VINTage firmware may be needed for the RF to work reliably. Non-VINT firmware *will* brick v1.0 & won't work properly on v1.1. Use dd-wrt.v24-9517-VINT_std.bin at above link. Details here.
Also, here's what I'm trying to do. I have a router with internet in one room. It's a WRT54GS (non-linux, so it has to be the standard firmware). I actually just bricked this trying to set a MAC address so I'm exchanging it after work.
I want to use the WRT54G with the DD-WRT firmware to make a client and connect wirelessly. Then I want to be able to plug my xbox into the G and get internet wirelessly from the GS. The routers are $50 compared to the wireless adapter that's $100, so despite frustration, if this works, I'll be very, very happy and have $50 to spend elsewhere.
I understand it's extremely difficult. I spent probably 4 hours on it last night. I tried Tomato first. It looks like Tomato requires both routers to have the same firmware on them, though so that was a flop unless I can get a co-worker to give me his router.
Edit: I went to DD-WRT's forums and (for some reason) thought they were old/dead. I see now that I was looking at the day instead of the year. Wow. Do you think I should just make a thread over there or...?
Also, thank you for replying. This has been driving me crazy. I was beginning to wonder if it was possible. I see all the tuts but of the three I've tried none of them have worked yet.

I've never had to use the VINT firmware as i haven't got routers of those versions. You didn't need to use VINT either btw.
Anyways, i use v23 SP2, the std version on some, the micro version on those that have less memory. I don't use anything newer as v24 is still a work in progress (i watch new v24 threads over at the DD-WRT forums often), and for me v23 is totally bulletproof (been using DD-WRT for about 18months i think).
I don't have my 360's connected wirelessly, but via eithernet via switches hooked up to one of the routers. However i read somewhere that it's relatively easy to turn a router into a (far cheaper) wireless gaming adapter. I don't remember where i read it but it's something along the lines of setting up the router as a client bridge and simply plugging it into the 360 (as long as the 360 has been setup correctly first). Sorry that's a bit vague but i follow that many threads that sometimes it's impossible to remember where i read stuff from.

So the v23 will work? The information I saw suggested that VINT was more stable for RF, but if v23 works, I'll see if I can upgrade to that.
Also, you've pretty much said exactly what I was talking about. I want to plug the xbox into the router and then transmit wirelessly to the other router and then out to the internet. Unfortunately, before I could try the newest attempt I found, the new router I bought bricked.
Just to confirm, though. I can use the TFTP command to issue a new firmware at any time, right?
Edit: Crap. Am I reading this right?
Quote: Note for users not using the original Linksys firmware: you cannot use TFTP! Change your firmware to the official Linksys firmware, and then continue below.

As much as i like plugging for other people to use DD-WRT, i don't enjoy the update process. It's fraught with danger and the wiki's are not half as clear as they should be. I half bricked the last router i did, luckily i managed to revive it. See my first post here in case it helps you revive your bricked router ~ http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=38407&highlight=
As i say, i need to refresh myself with the update process, it's been quite a few months since i did the last one. But if you definitely have the v2.0 then you don't need to use the VINT firmware, it's only the v1.0 and 1.1 you have to be wary of.
Up to you if you want to change versions, as i say i don't enjoy the process, wouldn't want you to brick the router on my account :)

Well, I'm having difficulty cloning the MAC address (not that I'll need to if I can get this setup working), changing some other settings, and all around having a hell of a time with the whole firmware so I think an upgrade is in order.
What files do I need to get the version you're using?
Also, list the order that I should apply them, if there is more than one. Any other tips would be appreciated.
Edit: The firmware I listed is the only file I loaded. Was I supposed to load a mini file first or something? I thought I read something about that, but nothing is clear on DD-WRT. I'm so confused.

This is what i always follow, i don't recall doing anything different on the v2 WRT54G ~ http://www.scorpiontek.org/portal/content/view/27/36/ - except i see the author has replaced v23 with v24 something or other in there.
I do recall having to flash back to Linksys if wanting to change DD-WRT versions, i seem to recall it's in that link somewhere, and the vxworks version that's listed is a German version.
I'll now re-read thru the link above and see if more cobwebs clear away :)
edit- It looks like it's vxworks_prep_v03 followed by vxworks_killer_g_v06
..i'm still reading thru for the rest..

That says for V5 and V6. Will that work on my V2?
Edit: Whoops. I missed that. I don't see a need to make a new post. Anyway, thank you for your help. Let me know if you find anything else.

Bah, I asked questions at the DD-WRT forum and the only guy who's responded so far clearly didn't read my wall-o-text. Typical.
Here's the thread if you want to keep up with it.
Hey, look at that. Apparently the model I have (the new one) can be modded. It's a v7.2 GS which I thought was too high but apparently DD-WRT can do it (though Tomato cannot). That's nice.

You should read thru the Scorpiontek thread i gave you, as i say that's how i set all my routers up. I know it states v5 and v6 but as i say, the v2.0 is nothing out of the ordinary like the 1.0 and 1.1
Up to you re whether you use v23 or v24, i simply say you don't need VINT versions for a v2.0.
Most of the DD-WRT posters will push the v24 versions, nothing wrong with that, i'm happy with v23 and it all just works. v24 is constantly being updated, again nothing wrong with that, i just prefer things to 'just work' personally.
You don't need to install micro then the mini or std version these days, you can load just the std version as far as i recall.

I've been reading through it and I think I'm going to go with the v23 because, like you, I like "stable" over "new". Also, I replied to your post on DD-WRT. Basically, just saying that I think you've given the most useful information out of everything I've read today.

Thanks; i'm trying to be as descriptive as i can, 'fraid i am quite forgetful hence why i seem vague on some of the info, i sometimes have to look up stuff (but the benefit of me always being as descriptive as i can means that it's then easier to remember the bits i forget LOL), my poor old brain just doesn't recollect all the info it used to quickly enough.
Also, i'm not at home at the moment so am using mobile broadband in an area that has crappy coverage, i'm literally on diallup speeds so it takes ages to call up even basic links and i have to constantly reconnect after every fews megabytes of traffic. The joy of constant page timeouts (in fact Afterdawn is very 'heavy' on diallup, simply editing a post usually results in a page timeout, at least the DD-WRT forums are very 'light').
Anyways, have a read thru the Scorpiontek link, it's very straightforward.

Agreed. As to the rest of that stuff you mentioned, that's partly why I posted that thread on the DD forums. I really don't want to be in the middle of a firmware update and find myself with Acme-Brick 500.
Edit: Anyway, looks like everything I've read agrees with you, though. So I'll try and give results asap.

Update:
The whole thing worked like a charm. I didn't even need the killer. The updater actually worked when I got back home.
Installed it, set it up via the instructions and it's working. I've been talking about it a bit on the DD-WRT forums. Apparently 30% is fine for signal strength (which I originally thought was low). So I think everything is all set.
Now I get to add some cool router info to my name, right? :D
PS: I wish I would have paid more attention in CCNA class.

Nice one. Am back at home on a decent connect now and access to my routers so if you need any advice on any router settings let us know.
Just updated my QOS settings and checking a few bits and pieces myself.
I use WDS between my two main DD-WRT routers and signal strength is always stable, i guess my average is about 35%.
