A couple of years ago, Circuit City and a couple other companies tried to push Divx. It bombed out and now my friend is stuck with a bunch of them.

Is there a program that would convert them to a playable format on a DVD player/Recorder?

These people have no idea what you're talking about.

He's not talking about DivX ;) encoded AVI files, he's talking about the proprietary disposable movie format that Circuit City was using to distribute movies around 99-2000. It was a competing format to DVD that required the player to phone in for authorization each time you wanted to watch it.

I've looked into this. To the best of my knowledge, nothing can be done with those discs. If you find out otherwise, let me know.
