iv searched and couldnt find anything bout what im going thru....maybe im not looking in the right place sry if this subject is already posted plz guid me to right way if so......anyway im using the latest ubuntu iv had it for a wile now and luv it, im tring to install my printer (brother mfc 420cn) linux reads the printer fine but printer will not respond when tring to print anything, (the printer works fine on other comp runnin xp) iv found mac drivers but dont know if they will work for me. iv DL the drivers for xp and tried to install them under wine and i get a message saying ((the native implementation of OLEAUT32.DLL cannot be used with wine's RPCRT4.DLL. remove OLEAUT32.DLL and try again.))
iv gone thru and done so but still gives me same error????
plz help thx DRAGONDOG

printers don't usually work in wine.. direct hardware access down lpt0 or 1 is what you need..

ok well i found under cups a mfc 420cn driver its now DL so hopfuly it will work

it works yes!....thanks for the help....wow iv been trying for months to get it to work and thats all i had to do.......i dl the cups file in synaptic package manager then opened printing in administration then on make and model i clicked change and selected my printer....and did a test and it finaly works

is there any way now to check the status of my printer such as ink....and i try to do a scan but no respond to comp???

ok well thats help i know what to do to get scanner to work now im having problems doing what i need to do i try to change some system settings and im told accsess denied that im not root....in the site it talks bout superuser i do what it says and still accsess denied and im the only usr on this os....also i tried to login as root pw root says wrong name so i guess there is no root login....idk
i even look at authorizations and im gratnted every thing i have no restrictions i dont know what to do....i love working on comp. but right now im at a hate

put sudo in front of any terminal command.. or if you want persistent root.. then sudo su -

password will be your password for your account (and is probably still in the globally readable unencrypted passwd file)

How long have you been using n00b and you don't know about sudo??

/me shakes head in disbelief.

Cups/printing manager under system drop down menu, should find your printer on the port you connected it to (be it either lpt1 or USB), then you should get a list of available drivers to install that would be compatible with your make and model.

should be incredibly straight forward. i got my Epson printer up and going in less than a minute under Debian (lenny and sid flavours) and will work across my network from an XP machine as well.

kt i already know that she explained that to me and gave me a helpful link i used linux for a wile now yet never installed a printer it just wasnt responding to the scanner portion i just did a paste and copy and dont think it used sudo, after the printer fix it gave me a bunch of YOU ARE NOT ROOT MUST BE SUPERUSER all that junk i used sudo for the printer dont think it was there for scanner........anyway..... thanks null ill try that, thats prolly what im doing wrong is not useing sudo

oh BTW its USB

Have a root in the x-sane backend.. I don't bother with my scanners.. but iI might need to set one up sometime. Some are supported, but none of mine ever were
