Hi all! Well with my tax return coming in i wanted to do a mostly new build, pretty everything except my gpu and maybe my psu will get replaced. My vid card is a sapphire 4870 and my psu is a Corsair hx-520. So far I know I want a q9550 cpu and to go ddr3 but i cant decide on a mobo. I want to be able to do some good overclocks and eventually some crossfire. It.s been a while since my last build and I've been too busy with work and my son being born to keep up with all the new chipsets and everything. Some help would be greatly appreciated.

Cpu: Intel E4300 1.80GHz @ 3GHz MoBo: GA965p-ds3 Ram: OCZ Gold DDr2 800 @ 667 4-4-4-12 Vid Card: Sapphire 4870 1GB HDD 2x 160 in Raid-0

Don't go DDR3, for socket 775 it isn't worth it. Get some decent Corsair XMS2 RAM. If you want to go crossfire I'd recommend something like an Asus Rampage Formula. If you're sticking with a single card, go with a Gigabyte, like an EP45-UD3R.

Thanks for the reply..ive never used corsair...right now im so poor i have 2 sticks ocz gold. one stick g. skill, and one stick ocz reaper. and right now im not going crossfire but i want the option since my vid card is already down to $179 on newegg. how much o a overclocker is the ram? cuz none of the sticks i have now will go anywhere higher than 800 but thats prolly cuz of the processer, lol.

It's more likely because they're OCZ. OCZ RAM is pretty bad at overclocking, but you will also get severe memory performance problems if the sticks are different sizes or different brands.

lol thats funny my teacher said OCZ was great for overclocking, and btw im in a tech school for computer networking and security (im in my linux class right now) i knew he was full of crap. hes an AMD fanboy, like the bad kind and keeps telling me to go for and amd pc with ocz or mushkin ram. But anyway i figured it was prolly the ram too.

Mushkin make good RAM (but mediocre power supplies), but OCZ RAM, though it used to be good, is nowhere near as good as it used to be. I think his knowledge is sound but outdated.

cuz its pretty cheap now only $45 for 4GB and this way with a good quad core not being fully utilized and the same for 8GB of ram i wont have to upgrade for quite a while. last computer i built i didnt really think much about the future. The onein my sig just wasnt prepared for the future. back to work now.

I only say because using 8GB will massively cut how far you can overclock, and I've never needed to use more than 4GB. Realistically, you may as well wait until RAM is really a problem. DDR2 isn't going to go away any time soon.

well im not goin for insane over clocks just as much as i can even if its only like 50-100MHz, and the proc is already 2.83 so i just wanted to try for 3GHz. You see I want the extra ram so i can run a virtually server for my home network and switch on and off a extra machine when i need it without having to turn off anything else. and i could have all that run off one or two cores and like 2-3 gigs of ram. That way my main OS will always have like 2-3 cores and more than enough ram. Unless you can think of a better setup. I just dont want a separate machine, a quadcore will already eat plenty of power up i dont need a second machine making it worse, lol.

Perhaps, but I'm not entirely sure why you need a virtual machine when you can just multitask with your own system.

Well after playing with a server in school i wanted a domain enviroment with active directory and all that good stuff that you get with server because everyone in this house has their own computer and when this isp called optimum goes down to south jersey they have a nice 30/5 service for only like $30 or 40 that doesnt block the common server ports so i wanted to get a direct connect to my familys house so we can share more stuff since I have kid i wanted a more efficent way to share all the photos and videos of him as well as setup our own personal family exchange box. Since domain names are so cheap i could get one so the email would be online and we could always know whats goin on with everyone since I think you can view other peoples calenders. So that would make it easy knowing who could watch our son or what days we can bring him for visits and im sure there are more things we can do. NOt to mention having my own server would be great practice while im in school. since i do need to know how to operate a server and most companies are virtulizing.

I'm thinking you'd be more limited by bandwidth than RAM there, but it does sound like one of those rare occasions where more RAM would work. Best of luck!
