Data is only stored permanently in hard drives, or on CDs/DVDs that you record. It is stored temporarily in RAM, which is volatile so loses the information shortly after the machine is switched off.
So if I've got some data that I need to take from my pc I just need to act with my hard disks because other hardware components haven't stored anything. Right?

I have a few 2.5" hard drives in USB 2.0 enclosures, used as glorified USB sticks but they're a tad unreliable, they've lost data more than a few times so i prefer to stick to standard tried and trusted USB sticks (i have reliable 3.5" hard drives in enclosures but they're too bulky to carry around). A good alternative to USB sticks is/are SD cards, my largest one is only a 4GB standard card, at the moment but the performance is more than adequate so in the future i'll buy a 16GB or so SD card to keep in my 'man bag' for use as a glorified USB stick.
