I encountered this problem for the very first time today while using ConvertXtoDvd I've been burning DVDs successfully for the past 1.5 years on this computer with absolutely no problem until now. I have even used this same brand of DVD successfully 10-12 times since I bought a spindle a couple of months ago. I successfully burned a DVD as recently as 24 hours ago.

But today, all of a sudden, I'm unable to burn at all. I've even tried with Nero and failed there as well.

The only thing out of the ordinary that I would report is that the action I took immediately before the first instance of this error is using DVD Shrink. I inserted a DVD-RW for perhaps the very 1st time in this computer (I never, ever use RWs, but was copying something for a friend), and used DVD Shrink to rip the video.

I took the DVD-RW out, put one of my DVD-Rs in (which worked, again, 24 hours earlier) and came up with the following error. I've tried 7 or 8 times, including trying another file, and they have all failed. I've restarted the system, checked to make sure I had the right drivers- and I don't seem to be having any PIO/DMA problem as nothing of the sort shows up in the log and I checked the device manager anyway.

I also tried using Nero, and the burn also failed there.

I have done a system restore to a point where DVD burning worked; deleted and re-installed the DVD-R driver; and also tried to format/write to DVD by simply using Vista (right clicking a file and clicking Send To...)

Any suggestions? Could the DVD-RW/DVD Shrink operation I did have caused this? Or is it a coincidence?

"Could the DVD-RW/DVD Shrink operation I did have caused this?"

It could very well be. May I suggest 2 things that you could try:

1) Try insert a DVD-R with video recorded into the burner and see if it can be recognized and played. If yes, try a few times more to make sure. Then try the burning operation again.

2) Download and install Nero Infotool. Use the program to check if a blank DVD can be recognized before using it for burning.

Also, try burning at lower speed (2-4x)at least for some time even when things work again.

Hope these help. Good luck!

Thanks for the response.

I was able to fix it. I bought another brand of DVD-Rs (Toshiba). It burned successfully. I then went and tried the SONY DVD-Rs that stopped working and that was successful as well. So using a different brand seemed to "jump start" the burner.
