My apologies if this thread belongs in another section. Please move if it is not appropriate.

Okay so I have a Dell Insprion 430 Desktop with Windows XP. I was discussing with a friend about that Conficker virus that apparently was aussumed to hit during April 1st.

So I thought yeah I'll run a Ubuntu live cd for a while. I booted into the bios, then realised I didn't have a cd with me. So I exited from the bios and selected to start windows normally. But then I get a blue screen of death with the message "Unmountable_volume error" etc.

I check the bios and according to the boot device configuration the hardrive should boot first. So I restart and the Windows logo appears and a I get a loading bar. Then I get the choice to boot from safe mode, start windows normally ect . Choosing any of these options results in a Unmountable_boot_volume error.

I make sure it boots from SATA 0 and is set to the normal boot list I reset I still have my windows xp boot cd. I don't believe I changed anything as I selected exit immediately but I find it strange that I get these errors as soon as I go into the bios.

From hearing from others I believe it is a problem with my master boot record.

Using my Windows Xp CD I went into the recovery console and tried the commands 'fixmbr' and 'fixboot' with both still giving me the same result as my original problem.

Windows Logo, loading bar, boot options then a blue screen and Unmountable_volume error.

Is there any way to recover my data off there? Using a live CD called NFTS Reader (I think that is what it was called)My data is still on my hard drive. Is there any way I can transfer it to a memory stick?

Or can I fix this problem and boot my computer as normal somehow?

Or can I reinstall Windows XP to a different new partion and then copy and paste my old data from the old partion as normal. Or do I have to reinstall my entire system?

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Please help me......... I am desperate.

UPDATE: Ok maybe fmbr and fixboot did something or I put the bios settings back to normal. All I know is that I was about to preform another fixmbr and it asked me to select which Windows partion. I rebooted and selected boot windows normally and the computer restarted fine. Strange.
