Sony RDR-VX535 DVD/VCR recorder

My parents bought this Sony DVD/VCR recorder to copy VHS movies to DVD's, here in Hawaii the tapes get all moldy then have to be cleaned to work again so they bought this recorder to copy the tapes but when we try to copy them a box pops up and says that it won't let it because the tapes are copywrited. Is there a way around this? We just want to be able to watch movies without worring about mold.
