Trouble creating a home network on windows help!!!

Ok so I have a HP laptop running XP Home and connecting wirelessly to the net via linksys router. I have a desktop running Vista 64 bit and is wired to my linksys router. I cannot seem to create a local network for file sharing. I run the setup wizard on my laptop and says installed successfully, then I take my XP setup disk over to my desktop running vista (it states to do this on the wizard after finishing the first computer) do the necessary steps and give me the error mssg:

An error occurred during configuration of the network on this computer.

You can configure your network manually, or you can run the wizard again with different setting.

I am thinking and hoping it is something simple and someone might know what to do thanks in advance
