I'm having trouble specifically burning DL DVDs. I use XP with SP2 and I've had my computer for quite some time. I use DVD Shrink to back up the files, but it fails everytime due to an error with Nero that says "Could not perform start of Disc-at-once" I guess. I've looked at many forum postings and tried checking my settings step by step, but I'm not sure what's going on. I tried to update Nero, but they say I have to send for a DVD with the latest Nero 6 update. Also, I tried looking at my DMA settings in the device manager, since one of my log file entries says "DMA off." I followed the instructions as best I could, but I'm really not sure what I'm looking at.
One forum said to delete the drivers and have Windows re-install them at start-up, but another forum said some of the device drivers were for my hard drives and they should not be deleted. Under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers I had two drives listed as Primary IDE Channel. The first had Ultra DMA Mode 5 listed under Device 0 and the second had Ultra DMA Mode 2 listed under Devices 0 & 1. There was a Secondary IDE Channel that listed "Not Applicable."
Does anyone out there kknow what I need to do to fix this? Any input would be greatly appreciated. I've cut & pasted my log file from the burn failure if it will help.

I've installed ImgBurn and tried to run it still using my Memorex DL media and without updating my firmware just to see if it worked. Naturally, it did not. One of the errors it said was that the media was not supported. I figure this could be either the Memorex media is crap or my firmware is not up to date.
The reason I haven't updated my firmware yet is because of a discrepancy I wanted to clear up first. My current firmware version is listed as 2.98 in the burn log I posted earlier (and confirmed by ImgBurn), but the most recent version both NEC and ImgBurn finds is 2.1B. Now, this gives me pause because 2.98 would seem the newer version, but I haven't updated my firmware in the six years I've owned my computer. I thought this version number could be to entirely different firmware Gateway installed when they assembled my computer. I checked the Gateway site and there's no updates I could find for burners. So, I guess my question is, is the firmware ImgBurn finds safe to update? Will it work with my system or will it cause problems?

Tools > Drive > Capabilities to verify that the drive supports writing DL media (I'm sure it does).
The consensus seems to be that the only reliable DL disk is the Verbatim+R and the only software that can reliably burn it is ImgBurn.
It's possible that your 2.98 firmware was created for Gateway and that the new firmware is the series for the OEM drives.
This link would tend to confirm that view.

If it was me, I would try the Verbatim then the firmware.

Thanks. I picked up the Verbatim DL discs and they worked. Hard to believe it was that simple. How can Memorex comtinue to sell DL DVDs if they don't work? What a mystery.
