I just bought some DVD-R's, which are these here to be more precise.
I have the S203D as stated in the thread name and I've had no problems with any kind of discs, but these... however, I successfully burned a movie with my NEC 2500A drive on the verbatims here, so it's not the media. Under ImgBurn, the S203D could only collect these information:
Disc ID: 0@P-!-00
Book Type: DVD-R Part Version: 5
Disc Size: 120mm
Maximum Read Rate: Not Specified
Number of Layers: 1
Track Path: Parallel Track Path (PTP)
Linear Density: 0.267 um/bit
Track Density: 0.74 um/track
First Physical Sector of Data Area: 196,608
Last Physical Sector of Data Area: 0
Last Physical Sector in Layer 0: 0
Apparently, the samsung can't read the media and if I try to burn anything it fails after 2 seconds, making the disc unusable and so on. It showed something about the media being dirty and something about I/O.
The S203D seems to work perfetctly with my Verbatim 8.5GB media :\
I'd love to make a screenshot of the exact error information, but I've already screwed 3 dvd's and since I'm short on money...
So, is my drive broken or what's wrong? Afaik, it's supposed to be quite the good drive, but dunno :\
Samsung makes terrible drives (even their hard drives are junk). The only thing worse than a Samsung burner is a sony burner. I am guessing that your 8.5gb media is DVD+R DL? If so, you will need DVD+R discs with that samsung burner. In general, you should always get DVD+R anyway; DVD-R is a leftover from the very first DVD burners.
