I have a 57 inch crt rear projection tv with hdmi, component, and s-video in. I have a Dell Inspiron 15 laptop with vga out. I want to get the best possible resolution out of my tv when used as a remote monitor for my laptop. I had a cheap 40 dollar vga to s-video converter, but the resolution was very poor of course. I can't use a regular vga to hdmi converter due to my integrated video card does not give me enough options to mess with my remote monitor resolution. I need to know if a vga to hdmi video SCALER, which claims to automatically find my tv's native resolution of 720p or 1080i, will convert the signal to a reasonable resolution on my tv (like 720p). I am not really looking to watch hd movies this way, just want to have a clear picture. I would like to read the text displayed on my tv when using the computer this way. Lend me a hand please!

You are always going to have trouble reading text on a rear projection tv. They are very blurry, this is just a fact of life. You can feed it a higher quality signal, but the picture will be just as bad.

Standard def TVs (i.e. CRTs) were always near-impossible to read text on.

HD Ready, amazingly does not necessarily mean High Definition. It means it has to do at least EDTV (480p as opposed to 480i) but need not go no higher.

Yes. This is why I replaced my 36" 1080P CRT TV...at 480p and the largest fonts windows has, I still could barely read the text in the windows start menu. This is why blu ray discs still have huge text for the subtitles.
