i'm still getting the Yellow question mark for the following...

IEEE 1394 Controller
PCI device
Video Controler

when i plug the ethernet cable in it says 100Mbps but says little or no connectivity. if i can get on the net with this computer i think i can use Uniblue driver scanner to find the missing and out of date drivers... but two of the drivers you suggested I downloaded last night and they didnt change anything....

Any idea how to get this machine to work on the net... I'm working on this for a friend and it's hardwired into the modem. does the modem only recognize one computer at a time?

thanks

download & install the intel chipset driver if haven't already as might fix some things. are you using a router or switching ethernet cable back & forth between machines?

I tried downloading the Intel chips set first and it didn't fix anything didn't even seem like it did anything at all...

I'm not using a router at the present moment but i have one here at the house that needs to be reset.. it's set to only allow 3 machines to be running on it at once...something a buddy of mine helped me with... just don't remember what to do to fix it and make it a secure connection...

I was just switching the Ethernet cable back and forth between the laptop and the desktop...

Do I need to call the cable provider?

It's not your ISP's fault. Download the manual for your router and it should have all the info you need.

Did you download the Intel driver from the intel site or from the Dell site?

I'm not currently using the modem right now.. I can figure the router out another time... I just want to be able to hook the lap top up to the net and them I think I can get the rest of the drivers once this is done using a program.

Yes I downloaded it from the Intel site... I still have the driver... maybe I downloaded the wrong one... I used PC wizard to find out what chips set I have it says: Intel i910GML/i915GMS.

Thanks guys..

when not using the router but need 2 different pc's to access the net, disconnect the coax/telephone cable & power cable to modem, count 20 seconds, connect ethernet cable to other pc then connect power & coax/telephone cables in that order. should now be on the net on that pc. do same proceedure to go back to other pc.

im pretty sure you didnt install the drivers in proper order...

after reinstalling windows, when installing the drivers, you MUST install the chipset drivers FIRST. if you dont you will have the exact same problems youre having now. i had the same problem.

i suggest you(like me) bite the bullet & reinstall windows AGAIN & this time when you go to install the drivers, off of the drivers cd, install the intel chipset first, install the graphics drivers second, the audio drivers third, & then install any other drivers on the cd.
