the wife wants a laptop and she's decided she wants a dell Inspiron basically because she can get it in red!!below is a link to one I've picked.
http://ecomm.euro.dell.com/dellstore/bas...&&details=false
I would like to hear from anyone with experience of a dell and is this worth my money(£500)or should I be looking at anything else.
any input would be greatly appreciated.

If she's already picked it by color, IMHO that's what she's going to want.

An anecdote:
When I used to sell/drill bowling balls (tenpin), the customer's initial (and usually eventual) choice was always primarily based on one of 3 things.

Price
Performance
Color

The ones who were least likely to change their minds or be "sold" into something else were the ones who came into the shop with a specific color in mind.

Your link did not go to a specific laptop model. The Inspiron series are not "bad" laptops. You can always do better on price/performance, but if she's set on color, good luck in changing her mind.

Speaking of red, I know that this isn't much help since you're in the UK, but this is a Dell, $600.00 USD and it's RED

Thanks to the "Product Red" campaign, there are various companies making red laptops.

That said, I got my boss one of these insperon laptops because she wanted a green laptop and she did not care about ANYTHING else. It took over a month to recieve it, and we had no customizations other than the color (the customizations were very expensive, so I bought the ram upgrade elsewhere). They also did not offer any form of x64 windows at the time, and it came loaded down with terrible bloatware. Because of this, the first thing I had to do once we got it was to wipe the hard drive and install Vista64 on it. Then upgraded to 4GB memory.

Overall, it was one of the best experiences I have ever had with an OEM computer...

Vista64 is more stable in my experience, but not by much. The main advantage is the ability to use more than 4GB of ram. If you don't need that much ram, then you don't need 64bit.

[edit] I guess product red is already history...I can't find the HP in red anymore...but then there were never an offical product red partner anyway.

One other option is to just get a sticker (or "Skin") and stick it on a black laptop...

Hey guys

excuse me to but in, but i know Samsung do a Red laptop. in my experience i don't like Dells and won't buy one. Each and every one has their own opinions which is fine. I have enclosed to link to try it out, i'm not sure if it's the same red you'd like though

Sony's after sales service is atrocious, Dell's is OK, but you have to pay for a service package to get decent service, getting like Apple these days.

Good luck, when it comes down to it, my wife also doesn't give a damn about what's inside as long as her laptop looks pretty and can run 5(!) messaging apps at the same time and stream Fuji tv...
