Do the sockets really go bad? I am figuring they are metal and should not go bad before the chips but this is the second time in about a week I have heard about needing to switch out a socket. I just figured why bother even asking why he wanted to do that.

You made me look! I can see what could go bad. Well you can learn a thing or two if you read enough posts.

However you should feel that it does not catch correctly. It should't feel tight like it used to. Is that what happens?

hey before you look around to replace the socket, check if the ipod plays music through the port instead of the headphone socket(use an fm transmitter, or a speaker dock) if it doesn't then that means that the logic board is done, and it's time for a new ipod, or a new logic boad ( not worth the trouble imo)
