Right, I've been using this Computer, Compaq Presario Family etcc. I've never come across the point where I can burn and read dvds but cannot read or burn cd-r's. Whenever I put a disc in i get a funny noise and the spin down just continuously going without a result. Is this a major problem ? Anything I can do to fix this ? Need MAJOR help, please.
Thankyou.

So pretty soon the drive won't be able to read dvd's aswell ?
It's a bit odd because this just happened outta the blue when i was burning an audio disc.

Maybe, maybe not.

It is not uncommon for a dual purpose writer (DVD, CD) to have one function die first, since they are separate and distinct functions.

Your chances of fixing the problem are slim to none. A firmware upgrade might help.

No, it's not. that's typically how electronics die.

Yeah, you can update firmware - try codeguys.rpc1.com They have tons of crossflash firmwares for the Lite-ON drives. Find one that matches yours, it seems some of them actually do some recalibration of the lasers. I'm in the process of trying track down one that will do that on my rebadged 1633. My system is everything works, it just burns at 1.8x while burning DVDs. Seems to be a symptom cause by using MEMOREX MEDIA.

thanks, i don't think its recalibrated the drive, im gonna try and find some info on that later. I can burn my discs from 4-16x, thats perfect, only the cd-r which is bugging me, i have to use my older computer for that.

Well, if DVDs are burning fine, CD won't read or write, than the CD side of the laser probably died. Their are actually two different lasers in a DVD drive. One for the DVDs, one of the CDs.

I did finally get my problem solved. Well, the electronic end anyways. Now that the drives are running proper speed again, they have decided to show their age. Time to open them up and clean and lube tracking rails and put rubber restorent on the grip pad on the spindle. The disc are slipping and skidding. That tends to cause big issues for me burning once the drive breaks the 6x barrier or 32x in CD Mode. Hehe.
