I just got a Vizio VW32L and i am trying to connect my laptop to it. My laptop is a Dell Vostro 1500. Both my tv and laptop have VGA connections so I thought this would be simple but it is proving difficult. I tried various resolutions starting at the lowest available, and at 60hz but none of them are working.

My video card, a nvidia 8600m gt is up to date. I tried doing the steps in the proper order according to the manual; turning both the tv and pc off, plugging them up, and turning them on, but it still didn't work.

I know the vga input on the tv works properly because I've used it with my xbox VGA cable that I used to connect to a monitor. I have been able to connect my laptop to my old tv via a s-video cord. Normally, when I did that my laptop would auto detect my tv and a prompt would come up to set up multiple displays.

Are there any drivers i should try? Or any other advice?

Does your Laptop have S-Video connection? if it does you can get an s-video to component cable that is what I use and it works great With Nvidia 6100 chipset my laptop is two years old I get good 720p resolutions. Have you tried connecting the vga cable to the tv and rebooting your laptop Nvidia chipsets often will default to the external connection on reboot. Now there is also the Nvidia control panel that you can go into to set up any external connection and find what resolutions are supported even tweak it for best picture quality. Your Laptop certainly has a good chipset so all you need is good options on your laptop if it has HDMI I would use that as a prefered connection.
