Launching backups with just an SD card?

I was looking to put my Gamecube inside of a Dreamcast shell, but I pulled off the dvd drive connector hoping to connect it with just wires and save about 1cm. Well I'm not sure If I'll be able to do all that soldering, and I figured I'd still try and do something with my gamecube.


Since using dvds is out of the question, If I installed a modchip would I be able to boot backups off of the SD card? I haven't seen anything on it but the usb gecko can do it, can't it?

Thanks for the help. If the SD launching thing doesn't work out I probably could pull off the soldering but I'd rather not.


edit: So the SD geco doesn't load backups but how does it manage to boot with no disc in the gamecube?
