A few minutes ago I tried to watch a movie but for some reason I can't hear anything but background music. I think this is because the movie has 5.1 while I'm using headphones and it's similar to a problem I've had in the past with my dvd player, which was fixed by setting the receiver to 2ch output. Anyone know how I can get it play properly with headphones?

The headphones are plugged into the green socket and the audio card is a Audio SupremeFX ADI 1988B Codec (the one that came with my Commando MB). Never had a problem playing stuff before but I can't be sure that I've ever tried to play something with only 5.1 surround.
Whatever you use for decoding the ac3 (ac3filter or ffdshow ?), they
will provide, somewhere in their configuration, a way to
reduce the channels to 2-channel stereo.
That dawned on me a overnight too Dave. It's been a long time since I looked at the sound side of a doze comp.
I remember somewhere there being a speaker setup.. might be in control panel or mixer properties.. no xp here.. can't investigate... I guess setting it to 2 speakers (stereo) config would do the trick?

a quick nip next door and we have the answer...
control panel > sound and audio devices > advanced > speakers
has 2 speakers.. 3 speakers and even headphones in the config options.
hehehehehe.. there we go XD
btw.. that's one of my xp rebuilds for the neighbours.. don't it look cool (for a pile of M$ junk that is?)
Thanks for the help, got it to work. The fix was in the AC3 filter, had to max the gain and set its output to 2ch.

It does look good, a little too bright for my tastes though. All my systems remain default in regards to aesthetics with the exception to the background, too lazy to change anything lol. This summer M$ crap is going away, to be replaced with *nix :)
great stuff.. guess you have a realtek chipset then.. next doors machine has an old yamaha card.. because I built it out of scrap for them when their horribly expensive fista vaio lappy took a terminal dump..
the xp theme is called Rainbird.. and I think it's cute being all blue like that.
