Using: XP, Nero 5.5.10.56, DVDR+. Trying to backup Doc & Settings using Nero Express which has always worked after I have searched, found & shortened 'complained of' file names.

The saved log file gives "Joliet names of these files (listed here in ISO-L3) are the same: (but no file names are shown).

The DONE Burning window gives the names & failure reasons as:
"Joliet names of these files (listed here in ISO-L3) are the same:
RY_KW_A3, RY_KW_A2"
"Preparation of ISO9660 structures failed"

Yesterday it was 2 different names. I have unhidden & shown extensions for all files & searched for these & yesterday's names with no matches found. What created these files & why?

I have always been able to find my own "too long" names when I burned to CDR. Is the problem DVDR or Nero 5.5? Can I fix this in Nero 5.5.10 ? Does Nero 6.xx offer any more helpful diagnostic ?

Here's the logfile:

I might be wrong, though Nero 5.5 may not be able to burn DVD?

Anyway, try ImgBurn. It?s free!

I don't know whether I can invent new folder names containing my backup files & folders during the Imgburn session as I can with Nero? Or would I have to prepare a DVD folder structure on my hard drive before starting the Imgburn session?

I would prefer to stick with Nero 5.5 if I can solve the 'same joliet names' riddle.

I do not know the necessity of doing so. Shouldn?t it be a root directory of the disc?

(Edit)
After rereading your post, I think I understand your point. If you do not want to copy the certain folder in whole, you have to prepare such folder on HD before burning. In ImgBurn, you select fils and/or folders to burn.

I don?t remember Nero 5.5, though can you turn off ?Joliet?? (Shouldn't it be UDF instead of Joliet for DVD anyway?)

Again though, I believe Nero 6 is the earliest version to support burning DVD? (5.5 is only for CD when there isn?t recordable DVD.)So if you would like to burn DVD with Nero, you should get Nero 6 at least.

(Edit) Sorry, it is my mistake. According to Wikipedia, Version 5.5.4.0 is the first version to support burning DVD.
Though, I still recommend ImgBurn.

ImgBurn does not appear to support creating and filling 'virtual' DVD folders on the fly as does Nero. I have read some forums discussing INCD that discourage looking at it.

As best as I can surmise Nero 5.5 has a bug which omits a proper diagnostic for the 'same joliet names' it lists. I have browsed the net 7 posted the problem in a few places, so far, without success. I will try a Nero 7 version which came with my burner.

My last best option may be to arrange an external backup via USB.

Thanks for your efforts to help, & in answer to your puzzlement: I have 2 partitions of XP to backup, ie. with same named folders which must be distinguished on DVD by residing in differently named folders which I create & fill using temporary Nero cache prior to burning. I like the idea that I don't have to muck up my hard drive with temp folders which I have to delete after burning. Nero does it for me.

Problem solved with Nero 7 Essentials which came with my burner. Apparently the 'Same Name' files were somehow created by Nero & did not come from my HD.

I did notice though that the 'Simulate Option' is still not available for DVD burning.
