Need to decrypt folder that was previously encrypted without the certifcate!

I was getting a new a computer at work so i thought i better transfer some of my personal documents over to my external hard drive instead since i dont know what they would have done with my files.

anyways so I transfer the folder from my old computer to my external hard drive and all the files and folder are now encrypted (why i did that i have no idea..!)

THe tech guy has taken my old computer away and i deleted the original files on my old computer so there isnt a copy of it anywhere.

i read on help that i need a certificate to be able to decrypt the files but my old comp is getting reformmated this morning (probably already formated).

Is there any other way that a file can be decrypted without the need for a certificate?
