Hi all,
I recently received a replacement Thomson wireless modem from my SP,but the problem I am having with it is that when I enable WPA encreption it will not let me log on via wireless to the internet, but when I disable the WPA I have no problem with connection.
My sister also has a laptop "both Dell"and this is the confusing bit, when I enable WPA she can connect no problem and when I disable WPA she cannot connect,so the bottom line is that we both cannot log on to geather.
Can someone out there please poin me in the right direction.

First guess is a password problem. make sure that the modem and wireless cards match EXACTLY, parameter for parameter.
Make sure that SSID broadcast is enabled (default setting) at least until you can establish a connection. I have seen problems with WPA negotiation taking longer if it has to search for the SSID.

Have looked at all above, but still no luck.
As I have said my sister can log on with or without the encreption,so I would think it is a setting on my PC.
Thanks for the reply.

OK, I read through the post again. Please verify:
Unencrypted: Her - No, You - Yes
WPA: Her - Yes, You -
but then you go on to say:
"As I have said my sister can log on with or without the encreption,so I would think it is a setting on my PC."
I'm a little confused. Have you tried WEP just for grins?

Hi dailun,
Let me try to explain.
I can only log on via wireless if I disable the WEP encryption.
My sister can log on with or without encryption enabled, or disabled.
Hope this will explain my issue.
Thanks again for your interest.

Let me just add that I had to disable my sisters encryption, to let the two of us log on at the same time.Another issue.

Pardon me in advance for saying this, but you do know that WEP and WPA are two different types of encryption and are not compatible with each other right?
There are three conditions that must be met In order to successfully connect to the internet.
1. Wireless card can see SSID of router
2. Wireless card can connect to router
3. Wireless device can get IP address from router (assuming DHCP and no MAC filtering)
As painful as this might sound, you might have to step by step go through the scenarios with each computer one at a time and then together to get this sorted out.
So it seems that the bottom line is that you can't get encryption working if you can both access the router with encryption enabled.
Check the preamble settings and the MTU on your laptop.
Oh, and BTW, if you ARE using WEP (not WPA), make sure that you are using the same "KEY SETTING" on the router and laptop. I had to fix my aunt's PC (60 mile drive one way) because although the WEP key settings were correct, the router was set to shared key and her PC got reset to Open key.
I hope that this helps.

Yes WPA is easier to setup but has a lot of overhead, and is not as compatible also make sure your using TKIP not AES
WEP comes in two flavors 64 and 128
WEP/64 generates 4 different hex keys may look something like this
Key 1 6e-34-6h-87
Key 2 T5-76-6h-85
so on and so forth
only one key may be used at any given time.
in this case will use key 1
your router will be using key 1
and all your wireless cards will all use the same key as the router your sisters and yours.
the other option is that the wireless encryption in this router series is buggy and not worth having on.
if your router supports WPA2 use it has i find its much more stable and secure.
