Pardon my noobness in these questions. I had my pc built and installed so I haven't had to really install an os before.

I'm looking to upgrade to windows 7 64bit tomorrow from windows xp 32bit. I really don't want to lose anything I have now. I have my main files on my c drive. Everything else on a d drive. Will these be deleted when I do the upgrade?

What if any are the benefits to do a dual boot? I do have Microsoft.Windows.Virtual.PC.and.Windows.XP.Mode.for.Windows.7.Build.7100.x64 that I received from a reliable source.

What is the best way of going about this upgrade?

The files should not be deleted, the only thing that will get deleted in an upgrade are parts of windows itself. I would go dual boot, as Windows 7 is still a beta, and is still very buggy (even for a microsoft product). The best way of going about this upgrade is to wait untill about 2 years after windows 7 is released...it should be (somewhat) reliable by then.

I've been running Windows 7 RC1 solidly for a week (i don't sleep much), triple booted with XP and Mandriva Linux 2009.1. Virtually no bugginess here, and the formatting process prior to setup has proved reliable here, was also able to (safely) reformat partitions on another machine
