I need some info for an assignment. I've googled it, but haven't had much luck.

Anyway what I want to know is how do you know what the optimum amount of RAM you should install for a CPU is.

There is no standard answer to this. RAM & CPU requirements vary greatly based on what operating system and programs you intend to run, as well as how fast you want those programs to run, and at what settings you want them to run. Some people can do everything they need to do with 512MB, others NEED more than 8000MB.

There is no correct answer.

RAM and CPU have no interdependencies.

A CPU does nothing without an OS. The OS architecture determines the minimum amount of RAM required and the maximum anount of RAM supported.

Thanks for that. That's pretty much what I thought. The question is kind of weird though, it asks what is the optimum RAM I would need for various combos of Pentiums and Operating systems. So really I'm just looking at the OS and the processor is redundant.

the cpu is not redundant as the cpu, ram & os are intertwined with each other. you don't put vista on a p1-200mhz board with 64megs of ram.

That question was clearly writen by someone who does not know what they are talking about, and just read some specs for windows. The correct answer can be gotten by reading the same specs for windows...whatever microsoft recomends, you put as the answer.

Thanks guys. I had already written my answers based on the recommended specs for each version of Windows. They really just threw me by asking about various combinations of processors and operating systems.
