burning successful, playback problems on same machine

backup copies play successfully on other computers and stand alone players. the back up copies stop and freeze on the laptop that burned the disc. they play about 3/4 of the way through then stop. the laptop has been in constant use, playing back burned copies, for a couple of years.

dell inspirion 6400 running xp pro
tsst dvd + rw ts-l632d
verbatim dvd-r burning at 4x

i tried, unsuccessfully, to flash the firmware on the player with a program downloaded from dell.
i un-installed media player classic and vlc, re-installed the programs
i un-installed the driver for the optical drive and xp re-installed the driver on boot up.

the computer in question can still play some discs, the ones it has trouble with work fine in another computer or stand alone player.

any suggestions?
