hey, i just recently obtained a gameshark 2 v4, and i play backup games.
I've noticed that in order to get the cheats to work you have to activate the game. However, the game i want to play is a backup copy.
Is there any way to make the cheats work?
thanks in advance

You did not give enough info.
If your using Swapmagic, Boot GameShark pick game & cheats, swap for Swapmagic, then swap your Backup.
If your using ESR, then Boot GameShark pick game & cheats, then swap or eject, for ESR patched DVD.
If you have a Mod, read up on IT.

Quote: Booting a Playstation2 CD (Silver or CD-R)
? Boot GS2 disc 1.
? At the main screen, select START GAME and then select WITHOUT CODES.
? Once the GS2 is asking to change the game disc, press the EJECT button till the light changes from green to orange.
? The CD tray will now open and you can replace the CD game with your backup copy.
? The CD tray will automatically close after about 5 seconds.
? Wait till the the power LED changes from orange to green again and press X now to start the game.
I'm kind of a tech noob, so I am wondering if GS2 means Gameshark 2 and any version
also, thank you for the link

Why do you need a GameShark if your NOT using cheats?
PS2 version 1-4 can boot CD-R with GameShark2 v4 by Swap NOT Eject.
GameShark 2 v4 & GamesharkCARD (Must have Card)
GS2.4 does NOT eject, so you can swap, this is why its wanted by so many.

So the swap method is pretty much [correct me if im wrong]
-> insert Gameshark disk
-> turn power off for 5 seconds
-> turn it on and hold the reset button
-> activate game [in cheats menu] , then start game
-> let go of reset button, wait for tray to open
-> change disks, and press X as soon as the tray closes

I couldn't tell you for sure if that will work or not.
I think it would be real simple if you had a fliptop on your FAT PS2.
Then you would just have to swap the disk for your backup, once you select your codes and activate game.
Seeing like "imdragon" says Gameshark 2 V4 does not eject, so you can swap.
