Probably a driver problem. What's your friends soundcard manufacturer? Go their site and find the suitable drivers.

If its onboard sound then go to the manufacturer's site for the MB.

I a noob so experts please don't laugh at me, thanks =)

moved to correct forum as not a virus & spyware issue. what is the make & model# of the computer or motherboard? is there an exclamation mark in device manager? does the volume show up in the taskbar? is it muted?

Just to make clear what ddp is asking:

First of all "is it muted?" ahahahahaha, thats funny, well I guess it could happen.

Anyways ddp asked whether it comes up with an exclamation mark, I think he is talking about Device Manager. So to show device manager (in Windows XP, yes I still use XP, its so much better than Vista because I just know my way around it thats all).

Click start > right click My Computer > Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager.

Now once your here you will find a category called Sound video, and game controllers. Expand this and see if there is any yellow sign with an exclamation mark.

Of course if your using some other operating system (like Vista or something) google device manager vista or something.
