Hi all,

I'm currently running Windows XP SP3 Corporate edition on my desktop at uni, and am having a very strange problem with my internet.

I have to use VPN via Wifi to connect to the internet. Upon booting up, everything works fine. The wifi connects automatically, and then I connect the VPN.

However recently, I've been getting a very odd issue with my connection. After a while the internet cuts out. I try going on firefox, and I get the message "Proxy not found", suggested the VPN has cut out. I double click on the VPN icon on the system tray, which the icon suggests is still connected. So I double click on the icon, and the VPN window appears for a split second, and then vanishes again.

I try to disconnect the VPN by right clicking on it via the network connections window. Nothing happens. Then I try to see what's happening with the Wifi, by going on the WZC panel. It says windows cannot configure my wifi adaptor. Turns out the WZC service has stopped. I start it again, but it won't connect to the network. I disable the Wifi adaptor, but oddly it doesn't refresh until I press F5. Then I try to re-enable the wifi adaptor again but it won't start up - "It is not possible to connect at this time. No network was detected. You may need to plug in your network cable to complete the connection"

I may need to connect my network cable to complete a wireless connection? Something's not right here!

Only a restart actually fixes the problem.

Please help! I've tried a slow virus scan on AVG 8.5 Free edition to no avail, it kept finding a virus in Temporary Internet files which I cleared out. I'm at my wits end! I would reformat, but I'm right in the middle of my exams, and really don't have the time.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Boopop.

The problem seems to be caused in the first instance by the uni blocking your vpn .. it's their network not yours. They aren't going to like connections and data transfer they can't monitor passing in and out... because they are legally responsible these days for what you do with their hardware.

they are killing the vpn by killing your wifi .. and not allowing a reconnection until you reconnect by an actual hardware link.. I guess it's outside hacker security.. and you are falling foul of it by behaving like a hacker.

Sorry I think you got the wrong end of the stick. The VPN is the Uni's way of allowing us to connect to the internet. Another thing of interest is when I do restart I get told that windows used Data Execution Prevention, and that Dr Watson crash reporting had crashed before I restarted.
