I recently have run into an error while just doing a simple burn from vts file- when it comes time to burn NERO selects Image Recorder and only allows me to save as a NERO IMAGE FILE (.nrg)
No idea why this just started happening... I tried to read thru the post but not experience enough to really tell whats going on.
In this case I was using DVD+R instead of DVD-R
Not sure if this is NERO's way of saying the disc drive is bad.
Any help or idea's would be greatly appreciated

@goodjam, I had the exact same problem and fixed it recently with virus software. Like you, when I went to back up a DVD NERO Recode 3 only allowed for me to back up image file only? NERO no longer recognized my computers optical drives or DVD burners. I did a system sweep with WEBROOT anti-virus software, it located "MALWARE" virus on my system along with a couple of active trojan virus. Pissed I was because all this sh*t just walked cleaned through my recently updated Anti-Virus software. I used SPYBOT (Search & Destroy) which is a solid freeware anti-virus software which is my go to option for tough virAl intrusion. This virus cut off my access to SPYBOT totally? It also would not let me complete any google searches? Everything search would re-route to some phony webpage. Anyway, I spent the next day or so looking for a solution online and found one in WINDOWS LIVE ONE CARE $49.95. I learned about it @ Microsoft Windows Support website. I downloaded the software and it did the trick surprisingly...once the system sweep completed...NERO again located my drives.

Good mrng everyone..tried spam/virus program no luck.
I thin kit may be more to do with my pc then NERO..
I placed a regular DVD in the drive this morning with no results or automatic opening of a viewing program.
If anyone has any thoughts on making the PC able to read the drive please let me know.
Again, thanks for all the replies

If after a reboot, the drives still don't show. try this:
1. Click on START button, the click on RUN
2. Enter REGEDIT and press enter
3. When REGEDIT starts, open up the following folders
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CurrentControlSet
Control
Class
{4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
4. After clicking on {4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} you should see two settings on the right-hand side:
"Upperfilters"
"Lowerfilters"
Rightclick on each of them and select DELETE and click YES.
Then close REGEDIT, shutdown & restart your PC.
An easier way to do this is with ImgBurn.

Download and install ImgBurn. Open the program.
Copy and paste the log.
Edit:
Well I have to go to work.
The reason I have asked for this log is that I'm hoping you do not see this:
E 17:28:30 Reason: The maximum number of secrets that may be stored in a single system has been exceeded.
W 17:28:30 Errors were encountered when trying to access a drive.
W 17:28:30 This drive will not be visible in the program.
W 17:28:30 No devices detected!
If you see this in your log, you have a virus.

@goodjam It's a VIRUS. I didn't mention that prior to me concluding that a virus was the culprit. I uninstalled NERO 8 completely and then reinstalled it and the results were the same. NERO could not see my DVD burners (INTERNAL and EXTERNAL). MALWARE virus typically corrupts your registry and will effect your start up programs, for me NERO 8 is one of my start up programs. I contacted NERO and they would not give me a definite answer as to what they believed the problem was without my computers registry info. I declined that offer and resolved the issue myself using anti-virus software. Have you run a system scan. WEBROOT initially found like 5 viral intrusions, WINDOWS LIVE ONE CARE found 9. What anti-virus software are you using. Note: CloneDVD had no trouble at the time I had trouble with NERO but CLONEDVD does not do the same job as Recode 3 which allows me to see and disable more un-needed PSA's and WARNING info found on DVD's. SHRINK and RIPIT4ME on my system also had trouble...as these applications could no longer reference NERO or see my DVD drives to complete back ups to DVD VTS file or DVD media disc. All fixed once I completed a system sweep with WINDOWS LIVE ONE CARE. Hey try installing SPYBOT S&D (FREEWARE)this could do the trick too if your system will allow it to run.
