Hey all,

i tried to turn my EXT WD Network 1TB HDD on today and it's not powering up at all. There is no white light and nothing basically happens, i've emailed WD about it but they take ages to reply, so decided to create a thread here. I think it's fused, i don't see any other problems. One thing i'm worried about is that i have 500GB's worth of multimedia on there... a lot of stuff and hoping it won't be wiped, any ideas? I want to open it myself and change the fuse but not sure how, and it's still in warranty so i might just send it off to WD. Is it a fuse problem or something else? I hope nothing gets wiped, that would suck!

thanks :)

I don't think the externals have any fuses which can be replaced. (all the externals I have opened didn't have any fuses). Have you tried a different power supply or checked the current power supply.

More than likely just the electronics went bad and the drive is probably still good. (especially if you didn't drop it).

If you return it, they'll replace it with a new drive and won't return your data.

In my situation, I never return anything unless it fails right after I install it or it's DOA. Hard drives are always reusable. As long as the data isn't in some strange "format" (on the NAS it's usually in linux) that can only be read from the enclosures electronics you can recover it. If it was me, I would open it up and recover the data, but in my case I do it all the time and am very familiar with externals.

It depends on how valuable your data is whether you will attempt to recover it or just send it in for a replacement.

hmmm okay

thanks for the reply, really helpful unlike PCWorld, who say i need to pay them 100 quid to recover my data, ha in their dreams!

Yeah i want to recover my data, the drive is fine and it's in the normal state it came in when i bought it, nothing formatted etc, the data is very important to me, about 400GBs and not letting that go down the drain... i need to recover it that means, but am not sure how.. can you help me and point me in the right direction? Don't want to screw it up! P.S: it's a network HDD, does that make any difference?

thank you!
