For a long time I've used 6.6.1.15 perfectly successfully, along with DVD Shrink. I've never felt the need to "upgrade".

But now I'm appalled to find that the new Vista machine I've been compelled to buy seemingly won't run 6.6.1.15.

Can anyone suggest a satisfactory alternative that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, preferably nothing at all?

Wipe it and reinstall XP, vista was born a dinosaur and is almost fossilized by now. If that's not possible, you might get Free DVD Fab 6 free- and ImgBurn-free and use Shrink which I assume still works Pissta.

ImgBurn.com dvdfab.com Just set Shrink to burn with ImgBurn and you can also set Fab to burn a SL disc to a SL disc with ImgBurn

Decrypt with Fab recode with Shrink and Burn with ImgBurn. And you can also do dvd9s to Blank DLs, burning with ImgBurn from the DVD Fab rip.

All free stuff and quite handy also!

I am using Nero 8 Ultra Suite and well worth the money I paid for it.

I would if I could. It was always my intention to wipe Vista as soon as I had the machine, but it won't let me install XP. I get blue screen within a few steps after inserting the XP CD. I asked Toshiba, and they simply said "this machine cannot run XP". I can't imagine what they've done or why. They also fit a DVD drive that cannot be deregionalised.

It's the last Toshiba I'll ever buy.

That's the second or third we have seen that with... but I found a way round it.. it's a sata hdd and dvd drive .. so sata drivers are needed for xp crappy junk to install... but first you have to get hold of a floppy usb drive or a PXE bootable network setup and flash the bios with the variant used on the 512 ram xp versions.. If I could be bothered I would have a look at the os strings in the bootstrap routine down in the bios (after the hdd and dvd drive tables) and see what dirty tricks they are up to... this kind of manufacturer hardware lock to M$ software is 100% antitrust and illegal in Europe..

sabayon 4 goes on these tosh with fista home bollox (sorry basick) a treat .. but then takes about 4 days updating itself like gentoo always does every 2 days. Nice try sab.. not.

people report to me n00buntu 8 is ok.. even the wireless works out of the box, but I haven't tried it.. I knock back anything with fista on it these days.. not my problem supporting proprietary hardware running drm'd bios.

I'd be VERY grateful if you could steer me through this in language that I can understand. PM would be fine, though I know two other people here who have exactly the same issue with Toshibas. All would prefer to run XP but their machines won't take it, and I am sure there must be others like them.

I have quite a bit of hardware bits & pieces, including a USB DVD drive and an old Tosh happily running XP. I have original XP installation disks.

Until I changed to 6.6.1.15 after persuasion in this forum, I had for a long time used 6.3.1.15. As I reported above, 6.6.1.15 won't run under Vista. However, I've just tried going back to 6.3.1.15 and that seems to work. I haven't tried it exhaustively yet, but it's gone way further than I got with the later version with no signs of an impending problem.

Anyone forced to use Vista who doesn't want to pay for a NERO upgrade could try this earlier version.

Does it really refuse to run? I've got 6.3.1.20 running on Vista and each time I start it, Vista nags me with a message that "There are known compatibility issues..." I just ignore the message and continue, and it works perfectly.
