WinAvi version 8 AC3, DTS problem

I am converting mkv files to standard DVD so I can play them back on stand alone players. Everything is OK (great picture, subtitles). The problem I have is with the sound. Even if the input is Dolby digital 5,1 or DTS, I get good AC3 stereo sound, but not AC3 5,1 or DTS after the conversion. I have tried adjusting several decoders (ffdshow, AC3 filter) but I haven't got the solution yet.
I am using Vista premium.
Any help will be beneficial.
