I want to buy a modem for my computer to connect to DSL internet throught the phoneline, but I have a question.
Will a cable modem (such as this modem) work with DSL through the phoneline?
Also please recommend any DSL-capable modems that work well (preferrably that are both USB and ethernet connectable).
I appreciate any info and advice. Thank you.
Our house is already subscribed to DSL and we have a modem for one computer, but I want to get a modem for my computer (my brother, who pays for the dsl service, does not want to use a router).
I tried calling the DSL provider to order one from them, but it seems DSL modems are much cheaper online or in stores than what the DSL provider was selling theirs for.
I thought there was a small possibility that a cable modem might work with both types of internet service, but apparently that is not true.
I would still appreciate any recommendations or advice anyone has. Thank you.
You can't use 2 DSL modems on one DSL line. DSL is a POINT to POINT connection. One modem per Central office connection (i.e. pair of phone wires).
What you want is called a ROUTER.
You connect the DSL modem connection to the router, and the router distributes the internet connection to multiple computers via 10/100/1000 BT Ethernet or Wireless.
If you have more than one line, then you can have more than one DSL modem...but you will be paying about double every month. Perhapse your brother would be more open to a router if you got a quality unit like the 3Com officeconnect series.
BTW...if your current modem has both CAT5 & USB ports, you may be able to connect two computers to it without a router.
Thank you for the info and advice. I will look into all of these options. This is becoming a lot more work than I thought it would be, but oh well. Thanks again :)
