ok my girlfriend wants a laptop but we have a $550 spending cap Ive looked around but I cant find anything that I like can anyone throw some suggestions out there

There's lots of stuff in the $599.00 range, but less in the $499.00 range. If tax is included in your budget, you're looking at $499.00 anyway.

At $499.00 you looking at last year or the year before models but if you scratch and scrape, you might find something refurbished or even in your price range.

Right now Newegg has 11 in the $400.00-$500.00 and a few are dual core.

$550.00 is a very slim budget so that's probably why you don't see anything you like.

just got a new laptop from bestbuy last week. heres the link to it:

it was 50 bucks cheaper when i got it though, but its still in your price range, and i havent had any problems with it. upgraded to vista ultimate when i got home with it, and threw all my other programs on it later. only thing i wish it had was a 12 cell battery instead of the 6 cell, but i can get one cheap elsewhere though.

found this one on tigerdirect, not sure how long it will last at 500 bucks.
