Hi all. We have been given a homemade dvd of a wedding we attended. I want to copy just some of the footage from it.
When I 'explore' the disk, the files are stored in a VIDEO_TS folder, as VOB and IFO files.
I have copied much footage TO dvd , but never the other way. Can somebody please advise how I can import the files onto my pc , so I can edit them using Windows Movie Maker, or Nero. (so AVI files preferably, or MPG I guess ?)
This is probably a one-off, so I have no intention of buying any software !

Mucho thanks in advance.

Rip the DVD with DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter etc
Use VOB2MPG to convert the files in the VIDEO_TS folder to one large MPEG file and import it into WMM.

http://www.videohelp.com/tools/VOB2MPG

Note in the link, that it requires .net framework 2 be installed.

Thanks for the reply attar.

Just checking , but do I have to use DVD Shrink to copy/rip the info off the DVD onto my pc , even though its only a home made DVD ?
Or can I just copy the files ?

When you mention converting the VIDEO_TS folder , presumably you mean the data that is then on my pc ?

Thanks again.

The files comprising the movie are in the VIDEO_TS folder on the disk.
You can drag and drop the folder from the DVD onto the Desktop - or copy to anywhere convenient.
Point VOB2MPG to the VIDEO_TS folder and have it output to same.

Does the disk playback OK in the PC?

If it plays OK, suggest you rip it with 'DVD Decrypter' or 'DVDFab HD Decrypter'.

I tried 'DVD Decrypter' - unfortunately that failed as well - after about 25% copying.
Maybe I need to watch the DVD to see if it does play okay ?

Will also try copying it on another pc .

It sounds like the disc may have a problem. Or - It may appear to be copy protected. You could try DVDFABDecrypter if DVDDecrypter is having problems reading it. Check it for scratches, it may only need a cleaning. You could also limit the read speed for decrypter, as well as setting it to cycle the tray during the read (see videohelp for how to do this).

Instead of dragging the whole folder to my hard disk, I have now copied each file individually, just using copy and paste. All the files copied okay except the last file : VTS_01_4.VOB , which failed with the 'cyclical redundancy check ' error.
This file appears to be the 4th of 4 VOB files. It is 800,000kb - th eother 3 were 1,000,000kb.
I dont know if there's anything in that part of the data my wife wants to keep - is it really the last quarter of the video ?

Should I try to copy that file , another way , or can I run a repair of some sort on it ?

Thanks agian for any advice.

Load the disk, run DVD Decrypter.
Click on Tools > Settings > I/O and check 'Ignore Read Errors'.
Highlight VTS_01_4 and right click, 'Decrypt' - see if it can recover the information..
